Universal Pictures has shared a new trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s new animated comedy, The Bad Guys. Based on the Scholastic book series by Aaron Blabey, the film follows a motley crew of animal outlaws – led by a pickpocket named Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell) – who attempt to clean up their act and become law-abiding citizens.

In Reservoir Dogs-esque fashion, Mr. Wolf is joined by Mr. Snake, a jaded safecracker played by Marc Maron; Mr. Shark, a master of disguise, played by Craig Robinson; Mr. Piranha, a muscle guy, played by Anthony Ramos; and Ms. Tarantula, a sharp-tongued hacker, played by Awkwafina. The five partners in crime pull off countless heists over the years… until Mr. Wolf is caught, leading him to cut a deal to keep them out of prison that promises they’ll reform their “bad guy” ways.

Rockwell’s ringleader character narrates the trailer, which is set to a brassy rendition of P. Diddy, Black Rob, and Mark Curry’s “Bad Boy for Life.” Each Bad Guy’s unique skill set is introduced throughout, and we get a look at the crew’s struggle to be good samaritans when they see a cat stuck in a tree and can’t decide whether to smack it, skin it, stab it, sauté it, or save it.

Richard Ayoade (Paddington 2) – who plays Professor Marmalade, an arrogant-yet-adorable guinea pig who mentors the Bad Guys as they try to go civilian – stars alongside the aforementioned voice talent. The cast also includes Zazie Beetz (Joker), Lilly Singh (Bad Moms), and Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

The Bad Guys is directed by Pierre Perifel, who makes his feature-directing debut after serving as an animator on the Kung Fu Panda films. The film is produced by Damon Ross – a development executive on Trolls and The Boss Baby, and co-producer of Nacho Libre – and Rebecca Huntley, associate producer of The Boss Baby. Aaron Blabey, Etan Cohen, and Patrick Hughes serve as executive producers.

The film opens in theaters April 22, 2022.
